Summary:
GM crops are plants that have been genetically modified to be resistant to pests or herbicides. This keeps the plants from being killed by insects or herbicides that are sprayed in the field to eliminate weeds and other problematic plants. There has currently been a rise in demand for GM products to be labeled before they are sold so that the public is aware of what it is consuming. Though there have been acts taken to make this a law there has yet to be any law passed. Many fear that GM crops could be hazardous to the health of those that consume them. However many farmers use the GM crops because they are cheaper to produce and easier to manage.
My Opinion:
As GM crops are becoming more common it is a necessity for people to become more educated on what they are consuming. GM products are currently affecting the environment around them by giving birth to herbicide tolerant plants and pesticide resistant bugs. Although some farmers have taken actions to combat this by planting non GM crops so that the surrounding area does not adapt to be resistant to herbicides and insecticides. These crops also have a possibility to cause health problems in people due to the lack of information that we have on their long terms effects when consumed. I believe that if possible farmers should resort to planting natural crops until more is known about GM crops.
